My father was working in Texas in the 90’s, thus coming back home meant bringing the industrial-no-fuss fashion sense with him. For sometime I thought my parents were outlaws. I felt the children were exploited—yes, they made us wear acid-washed jeans and branded our feet with the western insignia, Converse. “Americana,” my father would always say. “Ugly,” I would rebut.
Back t…hen, I always thought that the 90’s was a docile time. Now, I would consider myself to be generally blessed to grow up in that decade. At that time Cebu started its industrial revolution, and common sense came hand in hand with practical dressing. To usher the transformation of my little island, avenues for entertainment became more frequent—Glicos, Fun World, Cebu Coliseum circus parades, dolphin shows in echo-tech, carnivals in Lahug, and mcdonald’s. The 90’s also nurtured the imagination of the young adults now— Disney Movies, cartoon network, movies like Mac and Me and Toy Story, and the Carol Duvall Show. Also, it was the decade that started my generation’s sexual revolution: The Little Mermaid and Sex and The City.
Thinking of it now, I feel obliged to withdraw my thoughts on my parents’ shortcomings towards fashion. Scanning through magazines on paper or online, I see the 90’s revolution coming back—drastically! So when my sister sent me these pair of Levi’s, I immediately thought, “God I miss the 90’s!”
